Functional laboratory education

The Foundations Lab Edit

Before specialized protocols, understand the basics. Start with your story, food, sleep, movement, medications, and relevant exposures, then select the tests most likely to change care.

Begin with the foundations

A question before a panel.

Begin with the question, then choose the test. Food, sleep, movement, connection, oral care, and relevant environmental changes remain the foundation. Laboratory work is most useful when a finding could change a decision.

01 / BLOOD & NOURISHMENT

Blood & Nourishment

A blood count and individually selected nutrient tests may help investigate symptoms or risk factors. Results need context, especially when inflammation or recent illness may alter them.

02 / METABOLIC FOUNDATIONS

Metabolic Foundations

The selected lipid and metabolic panels offer context about blood fats, glucose, electrolytes, proteins, and liver and kidney markers. Review the combined pattern with food, movement, blood pressure, and family history.

03 / THYROID & IMMUNE CONTEXT

Thyroid & Immune Context

The selected comprehensive thyroid panel includes antibodies. Thyroid hormones describe function, while antibodies can support investigation of an autoimmune process; an antibody result is not a measure of how well you feel.

04 / A BROADER BASELINE

A Broader Baseline

The selected female functional-health panel combines multiple systems. Review its components and previous results before ordering, because a broad panel may overlap with the smaller foundational options.

Quest Diagnostics

Lipid Panel, Standard

What it measures
Total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, triglycerides, and calculated lipid measures.
Why it is here · When it may be useful
A baseline or follow-up cardiovascular assessment is needed.
What ordering involves
Serum from a blood draw. The current storefront marks this test as requiring fasting. Follow the exact order instructions for duration and other preparation; discuss medication timing with the ordering clinician.
Keep in mind
Interpret with the reason for testing, symptoms, medical history, and the laboratory method. An isolated result is not a diagnosis.

Quest Diagnostics

Comprehensive Metabolic Panel without CO2, ALT

What it measures
Selected metabolic, electrolyte, protein, kidney, and liver-related markers. This specific panel omits carbon dioxide and ALT.
Why it is here · When it may be useful
A clinician specifically selects this reduced metabolic panel and confirms that omitted markers are not needed for the question.
What ordering involves
Serum from a blood draw. Follow the instructions supplied with the exact order. Fasting and medication timing may change when tests are combined.
Keep in mind
This is not the same panel as the Women’s Health Comprehensive Metabolic Panel: CO2 and ALT are omitted. Confirm which measurements are needed before ordering.

Precision Point Diagnostics

Comprehensive Thyroid Panel w/ Antibodies

What it measures
TSH, free and total T3, free and total T4, plus thyroid peroxidase and thyroglobulin antibodies.
Why it is here · When it may be useful
Symptoms, family history, or previous thyroid findings call for both thyroid-function and antibody assessment.
What ordering involves
Serum collected by a phlebotomist using the supplied kit. Follow the instructions supplied with the exact order. Fasting and medication timing may change when tests are combined.
Keep in mind
Interpret with the reason for testing, symptoms, medical history, and the laboratory method. An isolated result is not a diagnosis.

Quest Diagnostics

Functional Health Panel (Female)

What it measures
A broad set of 55 reported biomarkers selected for an assessment of female health; review the current analyte list to avoid duplicate orders.
Why it is here · When it may be useful
A wider baseline is clinically justified after reviewing existing results and the risk of unnecessary overlapping tests.
What ordering involves
Blood draw; the listing specifies plasma, serum, and whole blood. The current storefront marks this test as requiring fasting. Follow the exact order instructions for duration and other preparation; discuss medication timing with the ordering clinician.
Keep in mind
This Quest panel overlaps with individual tests. Review the exact 55-marker list and existing results before ordering; a broad panel can produce incidental findings.

Quest Diagnostics

CBC (includes Differential and Platelets)

What it measures
Red-cell measures, hemoglobin, hematocrit, platelets, and a white-cell differential.
Why it is here · When it may be useful
Fatigue, suspected anemia, immune-cell changes, or another clinical question warrants a blood count.
What ordering involves
Whole blood from a blood draw. Follow the instructions supplied with the exact order. Fasting and medication timing may change when tests are combined.
Keep in mind
Interpret with the reason for testing, symptoms, medical history, and the laboratory method. An isolated result is not a diagnosis.

A closer look

What the findings can tell us.

Collect with intention.

A1c alone does not require fasting. Fasting plasma glucose generally requires at least eight hours without food; follow your own laboratory and clinician instructions.

Keep the limits in view.

Neither an in-range result nor a long panel is a guarantee of health. Review results with trends, symptoms, and the clinical purpose of testing.

Results belong within your history, symptoms, examination, medications, and the laboratory's method. A reference interval is not a universal target for every person. There is no single validated set of 'optimal' values that applies across all assays and life stages.

Availability, ordering requirements, collection fees, and eligibility vary by test and location. Review the current Fullscript listing and your clinician's instructions before purchasing.

Good questions. Thoughtful answers.

Do I need every test in this guide?

No. Choose a test only when its result may change a useful decision, taking existing results, symptoms and your budget into account.

Does an out-of-range result identify the root cause?

Not by itself. Interpretation depends on the assay, collection, history and the pattern across findings. A result can be one clue without being the explanation.

Where can I see ordering requirements?

Open the individual Fullscript listing for current availability, specimen instructions and eligibility. A collection may include alternatives rather than tests intended to be purchased together.
