Natural Remedies for Eczema
As a naturopathic physician and former chief science officer of a condition based plant-focused skincare company that primarily offered eczema and sensitive skin products, I dug deep into the root causes and treatments behind eczema.
I found that a comprehensive protocol that focused on nutritional changes, microbiome balancing, decreasing inflammation, immune modulation, topicals with clean ingredients, and supporting the foundations of health (like sleep and managing stress) created highly effective results.
There are actually seven different types of eczema. Depending on the type of eczema, it could be caused by a food allergy, an immune response, or even a product you could be using in your everyday life like your laundry detergent or shampoo.
The 7 different types of eczema are…
1. Atopic Dermatitis
2. Contact Dermatitis
3. Dyshidrotic Eczema
4. Hand Eczema
5. Neurodermatitis
6. Nummular Eczema
7. Stasis Dermatitis
The Symptoms & Triggers:
Although the causes of eczema can be quite different, they all present with common symptoms including dry, scaly skin, redness, and intense itching. The underlying cause of eczema is still unknown but it’s thought to be related to inherited genes, an overactive immune system, lifestyle practices and exposures, and food and environmental allergens. Interestingly, scientific research has identified a specific gene mutation related to skin barrier function that seems to play an important role in the development of eczema. Oftentimes, eczema is made worse from daily routines that most people don’t think could be related like household cleaning products, synthetic fragrances, antibacterial personal care wipes, and even temporary tattoos.
